It’s all about that box, bout that box, bout that box!
I have posted before about using the right size boxes for packing, but it bears repeating after visiting a client who packed books into a large carton and realized too late that she nor the movers could move it! This box size dilemma seems obvious to an old mover like me but to many of you that are moving ahead with your downsizing and move preparations, it is not obvious at all. So, if you are starting to pack for your move, lets revisit the basics.
Use the right boxes. Standard moving boxes are best because of their uniform size and ability to stack without falling over. You can purchase moving boxes at U-Haul or most home stores like Lowes or Home Depot.
The golden rule of packing – the HEAVIER the item the SMALLER the box. This keeps the weight of the boxes manageable for both you and the movers. And if it fits into a box, it should be packed into one.
Always tape the box with a minimum of 2 strips of moving tape from end to end, covering the seam. DO NOT FOLD IN THE FLAPS OR USE MASKING TAPE. Both of those will have disastrous results when you go to pick up the box and everything falls out. Always us 2” packing tape. Tape can also be purchased wherever you buy your boxes.
Label on the side of the box, not on the top with a marking pen, not an ink pen. You should designate the room you want the box to go to and the general contents of the box. You do not have to write a book but recording what is in the box will sure help the unpacking process.
What boxes should you use for what?
Small Box (1.5 cubic feet)
- Papers, Files, Books, Photographs, Tools, Albums, Art Supplies,
- Canned Goods, Spices and Pantry items
Medium Carton (3 cubic feet)
- Kitchen pots and pans, bowls, small appliances, general housewares and décor
- Clothing, shoes, fabric and hobby supplies
- Dishes and glassware – make sure you pad properly.
Large Carton (4.5 cubic feet)
- Blankets, linens, pillows, stuffed animals, large toys and other bulky lighter items.
Use the right boxes and remember to label and you are on your way to a perfect move! Packing a few boxes every day will get you one step closer to being ready to go when that move day approaches.
