Moving Time Saver Tips – Electronics
The problem with electronics and all those components is that they all start to look the same when they are disconnected and in boxes. And all those cords – how do you keep them all organized? If you are not an Audio-Video Specialist, it can be quite the frustrating task to get them all put back together correctly. Like Humpty Dumpty, he couldn’t get it all back together again either.
Here are a few time saver tips that might help get things moved and put back together correctly. You can use this on computers and printer connections as well as television and stereo set ups. It takes a few minutes to do but it will be so worth the effort when you want to use your printer or watch TV!
- Take a photo of what the system setup looks like – front and back. This will remind you of what is stacked on top of what.
- Label the pieces – A, B, C, D etc. Use colored dots or blue tape. You can also purchase fancy electronic labels if you are really getting into it. Television might be an A, the DVD Player B, the Receiver C etc. Each piece has a letter. Remember to assign a letter to the power strips too. This insures that the cords are plugging into the right power strip.
- Label the outlets on each device (the ones that have a cord plugged into them) with a number.
- Label each end of the cords with the Piece – (Letter Designation) and the Number for the outlet number. The TV power cord would have A1 on one end and B1 on the other. It came from outlet #1 on the TV and it is plugged into outlet #1 on the DVD player.
- Keep cords and remotes for each device or system together. Use twist ties or large zip lock bags to keep things better organized.
- Use proper packing materials and cartons to protect your investment. If you have the original boxes, use them.
- If you don’t have the original packing boxes, make sure to use proper moving cartons and pad the pieces sufficiently with packing papers or bubble wrap so there is no damage while in transit.
